Rottweiler
Nickname(s): Rottie
Origin: Germany

Breed History
The Rottweiler traces its roots back to ancient Roman drover dogs used to herd cattle and protect outposts. These strong, dependable dogs traveled with Roman legions across Europe. In the German town of Rottweil, they evolved into skilled working dogs used by butchers and farmers to pull carts and guard livestock—earning the name “Rottweiler Metzgerhund” (Butcher’s Dog of Rottweil). Today, Rottweilers are valued as loyal family protectors, police and military service dogs, and confident companions.
