Breed History

The Cocker Spaniel has a long history as a skilled bird dog, originally bred in the United Kingdom to flush and retrieve game birds—especially woodcock, which gave the breed its name. Over time, two distinct types developed: the English Cocker Spaniel, and the smaller, more companion-oriented American Cocker Spaniel. Both versions are known for their affectionate nature, beauty, and versatility as both hunters and beloved family pets.

  • Coat: Silky, medium-length coat that may be slightly wavy; feathering on ears, chest, legs

  • Colors: Solid colors (black, buff, red, etc.), parti-color (two or more colors), and roan patterns
